About ICFST
The Illinois Center
for Food Safety and Technology was established in 1999 after the
acceptance of a proposal from the Illinois Institute of
Technology (IIT) to the Illinois Department of Commerce and
Community Affairs (DCCA). The proposal combined strategies from
industry, academia and government to create an organization that
would identify and address safety and technology issues of
Illinois food companies. The Illinois Department of Commerce and
Community Affairs granted IIT one million dollars to establish
the Illinois Center for Food Safety and Technology (ICFST).
The plan includes
many of the successful concepts that were already in operation
at the NCFST and provides for close interaction between the two
entities. NCFST was created through a CRADA with the US Food and
Drug Administration, IIT, and member companies and is industry
and federally funded. This affiliation with and proximity to the
National Center make available expertise, equipment, and
capabilities far beyond what could be accomplished at any other
location.
Since its inception,
ICFST has worked to form and leverage partnerships with NCFST,
industry, academia and government in order to serve the Illinois
food industry. The focus has been and continues to be education
and training, outreach and service to the food industry, and the
creation of a facility where small and medium sized food
companies can find the resources necessary to help them
manufacture and distribute safe foods in a successful business
environment.
